Don’t Let the Screen Define Manhood
Learning to recognize the masculine scripts sold by entertainment, advertising, and social media

Screens rarely present manhood neutrally. Stories, advertisements, influencers, games, and pornography repeatedly associate being a man with domination, sexual success, wealth, invulnerability, appearance, violence, sarcasm, or permanent adolescence.
Some portrayals are admirable and others destructive, but none deserves to disciple you. Jesus—not a celebrity, character, algorithm, or reaction against culture—is the measure of faithful human maturity.
Recognize the script
Repeated images make assumptions feel natural
Media can train desire long before you consciously agree with its message. Ask what a story rewards, what it mocks, how it treats women and weaker people, and what its hero believes strength is for.
Do not confuse discernment with fear of art. Good stories can reveal courage, loyalty, beauty, evil, sacrifice, and consequence. Discernment learns to receive what is true without surrendering judgment.

Reject the false extremes
A man is neither an emotionless weapon nor an irresponsible boy
Scripture includes men who fight, grieve, sing, build, repent, nurture, lead, serve, doubt, pray, and depend upon others. Emotional honesty is not the enemy of courage.
Neither is maturity defined by hobbies, body type, income, athletic ability, marital status, or personality. Biblical manhood is moral and relational before it is aesthetic.

Look to Christ
Jesus joins authority, courage, tenderness, and sacrifice
Jesus confronts evil without cruelty, receives children without embarrassment, weeps without losing strength, tells the truth without vanity, and uses authority to serve.
Christlike masculinity is not a costume made from selected traits. It is the life of a male disciple being formed in holiness, love, humility, self-control, responsibility, and courage.

Change the inputs
Discernment eventually affects consumption
Curate feeds, limit repeated exposure that feeds envy or lust, stop following personalities who profit from contempt, and make room for Scripture, embodied church life, work, friendship, and service.
Seek real men whose lives can be observed over time. A faithful father, tradesman, teacher, pastor, coach, husband, single man, or older brother in Christ may offer a truer model than someone known only through edited content.

- Identify one message about manhood your media habits repeatedly reinforce.
- Compare that message with the character and commands of Jesus.
- Remove one formative input and strengthen one real relationship with a faithful man.
