Are you excited about entering the dating world but bombarded with relationship quotes and memes? While they may seem appealing, it’s essential to approach dating with a balanced perspective. As someone who’s been through it, let me share some advice, especially for those in their teen years.

  1. Stay Realistic: Avoid Romanticizing Every Relationship In 1 Corinthians 13:4-7, the Bible reminds us about the nature of love: “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” We often see relationships portrayed as perfect journeys on TV or social media, with couples overcoming every obstacle. However, it’s crucial to remember that real-life relationships involve ups and downs. Don’t rush into thinking every relationship will be “the one.” Instead, focus on building a foundation of friendship and trust with your partner.
  1. Be Mindful of Unrealistic Expectations: When you come across statements like, “A real man stands by his girl no matter what,” or “She’s my life,” remember that people are flawed, and no one is perfect. Psalm 103:8 reminds us, “The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love.” Expecting absolute perfection or making someone the center of your life can lead to disappointment. Instead, seek a partner who complements your journey in faith and growth.
  2. Communicate and Learn: Proverbs 19:20 advises, “Listen to advice and accept discipline, and at the end, you will be counted among the wise.” Dating is an opportunity to understand someone better and see if a deeper connection is possible. Don’t assume that your partner knows everything or has all the answers. Like you, they are new to this experience and will also make mistakes. Emphasize open and honest communication to foster a healthy relationship.
  3. Seek Wisdom and Guidance: As a Christian, turn to God for wisdom and guidance in your relationships. James 1:5 assures, “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” Spend time in prayer, seeking His will for your life and your future partner. Remember, if you lack wisdom, ask God, and He will provide. Trust that His plan for your life is perfect and aligns with your best interests.
  4. Keep Relationships in Perspective: It’s essential to strike a balance between investing in a relationship and maintaining your individual identity and faith in Christ. Remember that our ultimate fulfillment comes from our relationship with God, not solely from a romantic partner. In Colossians 3:2, we are urged, “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” Keep God at the center of your life and relationships, and let His love guide your decisions.

While relationship memes and quotes can be fun to share, it’s crucial not to take them too seriously. Be realistic in your expectations, communicate openly with your partner, and seek wisdom from God. Dating is a journey of discovery, so enjoy the experience and trust in God’s plan for your life.
