Supplements and Spirituality: What Christian Men Should Know

As young Christian men striving to honor God in all aspects of our lives, it’s easy to focus on the more overt areas—prayer, reading the Bible, attending church, and serving others. While these are undeniably important, we shouldn’t overlook the care of our physical bodies, which the Apostle Paul describes as “temples of the Holy Spirit” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20, NLT).

In today’s fast-paced society, dietary supplements have become a staple in many people’s routines. They promise to fill the nutritional gaps in our diets, boost performance, and improve overall health. But how should we, as Christian men, approach the use of supplements? Let’s delve into this topic through the lens of our faith.

Biblical Perspective on Supplements

While the Bible does not explicitly mention dietary supplements, it does emphasize the importance of good stewardship of our bodies and relying on God’s provisions. For instance, Genesis 1:29 talks about God providing fruits and vegetables for human sustenance. As with all things, balance and moderation are key. Supplements should never replace a well-rounded diet filled with the nutritious foods God has provided.

Discernment and Wisdom

Before diving into the world of supplements, it’s important to exercise discernment and seek wisdom. Proverbs 4:7 (NLT) says, “Getting wisdom is the wisest thing you can do!” Consult healthcare professionals, and do your research. Not all supplements are created equal; some can interact negatively with medications or medical conditions.

Motives and Idolatry

Before you reach for that protein shake or pre-workout supplement, consider your motives. Are you looking for a quick fix or relying too much on human inventions rather than God’s provision? Paul warns in Colossians 2:21-23 (NLT) against following human rules and traditions over the teachings of Christ. Make sure supplements are not becoming idols that distract you from God.

Stewardship and Ethics

As responsible stewards, we should be informed about where our supplements come from. Are the companies behind them ethical? Are their products sourced sustainably? God calls us to be stewards of His creation (Genesis 2:15), and this extends to our consumption habits, including supplements.

Spiritual Benefits?

While supplements can provide certain physical benefits, they are not a substitute for spiritual nourishment. Jesus Himself said, “People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4, NLT). Make sure your primary focus remains on spiritual growth and dependence on God for all your needs.

As Christian men, our main goal is to glorify God in all we do, including how we take care of our bodies. Supplements can be beneficial but should be used wisely, ethically, and never as a replacement for God’s provisions. Seek professional advice, check your motives, and above all, make your spiritual well-being your top priority.
